KOCHI: These 22 mothers are showing that their differently-abled children lead fulfilling lives. They have joined a special school in Tripunithura as teachers and assistants, alongside their children, at the Kurikkad Adarsh Charitable Trust's special school catering to children aged two to 18 years.

Adarsh schools not only educate the children but also train parents in caregiving. Those interested are given further training and employed. Teachers include Manju Jayakumar, Shanthini, Sini Philip and K Sindhu. Teaching assistants are Ranjitha Sukumaran, Lalitha Rajan, Asha George, Anagha, Fatima, Lata Rajesh, M.S Swapna, Naseema, Philomena Sheeba Joy, Sajumol, Sajitha Binu, Kripa Gladson, Mary Jacob, Kanakam, Jayanthi, Saritha Reji, Saritha Anilkumar and Minimol.

Shanthini's daughter Jasmin, born prematurely in Kollam in 2003, benefited from Adarsh's services. Shanthini, then 22, became a teaching assistant and later a teacher after completing the special education course. She now heads the Down syndrome department. Jasmin completed her Plus Two and vocational training.

MS joined Adarsh in 2008 after his two-year-old son Sathyajith, who had limited mobility passed away in 2006. MS became a parent supporter and later a teaching assistant after receiving training. Despite Satyajith's passing at nine, MS remains dedicated to helping other children like his son.

"Special school staff must work with dedication, providing physiotherapy, computer and vocational training," says PR Mahadev, Secretary of Adarsh.
