The locals had driven away the elephant that came from Ernakulam to Idukki via Periyar. In the meantime, the elephant reached Neriamangalam. Unaware of it, Indira, who was plucking arrowroot, came before the wild elephant. She sustained serious injuries in the attack. Though she was rushed to the hospital by the locals, her life could not be saved. The locals said the wild elephant that regularly visits the area took her life.

Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose blamed the government for not doing anything on the wildlife attacks. Idukki is the most forested district in Kerala. If they cannot provide security to the people, then for what is the minister and the government. Kuriakose said the minister constantly called me to end my hunger strike staged. The MP also criticized that hundreds of people are living in fear.
