Kudumbashree is no longer just the name of a government initiative in the state. It has evolved from its roots of empowering women at the grassroots level to becoming a prominent presence in Kerala's society. Over twenty-five years, Kudumbashree has transformed into a brand symbolizing a new model of Kerala. The latest addition to its endeavors is the Lunch Bell initiative, recently launched in Thiruvananthapuram city.

As the name suggests, Lunch Bell offers on-order delivery of tasty and quality meals at fair prices to the Secretariat, government offices, banks, and private institutions in the capital. Orders are accepted through Pocket Mart, Kudumbashree's food delivery app, with lunch delivered on the same day for orders received by 7 am. Advance booking is also available up to one month ahead. Currently priced at Rs 60 for vegetarian and Rs 99 for non-vegetarian meals, the service begins with offices and institutions in the city center, with plans for expansion based on its success.

For many rushing from home to office in the morning, lunch can be a challenge. Lunch Bell addresses this by providing convenient, affordable meals prepared by skilled Kudumbashree members. The initiative, starting as an experiment in the capital, is poised for expansion to other districts.

However, lessons should be learned from the struggles faced by Kudumbashree Janakeeya hotels. Originally launched with government subsidies to offer meals at Rs 20, these hotels faced closure when the subsidies ceased. Despite challenges, they reopened with revised rates. Similarly, the Lunch Bell scheme must not falter due to subsidy issues. The government should extend support and goodwill to ensure the project's success and expansion to other areas promptly.
