KOZHIKODE: The uncertainty regarding the cremation of the dead body was dismissed when an order was issued to shoot and kill the bison that had gored Abraham, a farmer in Kakkayam. The body kept at the Kozhikode Medical College Mortuary will be cremated tomorrow after the post-mortem. District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh's two discussions with relatives and farmers' leaders regarding the issue of shooting the bison had failed.
Even two days after the death, the inquest proceedings were not completed. As the demands of the family and local people were not accepted, farmers' organizations and UDF blockaded the Collectorate area and the Wayanad National Highway today, leading to a major conflict. DCC President K Praveen Kumar and others were forcibly arrested and removed by the police. Kakkayam, Abraham's home town, also witnessed massive protests. The hartal called by LDF and UDF in Koorachunde panchayat was complete.
Abraham's family and farmers' organizations had taken a stand that they would not cooperate with the inquest proceedings without ordering the shooting of the bison. The response of the collector was that an order can be given to shoot and kill the wild animal only if there is an extreme threat, and an order has been issued to fire a tranquillizer shot. However, MK Raghavan MP, DCC President Adv K Praveen Kumar, Abraham's family members and others did not accept this. The current decision was made after this.
