NEW DELHI: The central government has issued a notification amending the Citizenship Act. The notification was issued by Home Minister Amit Shah. CAA was passed in Parliament in 2019. The Act provides citizenship to six categories of refugees.

It is noteworthy that the central government has issued the notification as the country is on the threshold of the Lok Sabha elections. When the bill was passed in 2019, a large-scale protest was staged across the country. Opposition parties and non-BJP-ruled states were holding massive protests.

Hundreds of people were killed in the anti-CAA protests in the country. With the notification of CAA, BJP's will be aiming to use it for their election campaigns as well.
