NEW DELHI: Big corporates and the company of the controversial lottery tycoon Santiago Martin are among those who have donated to political parties through election bonds. Based on the Supreme Court directive, the Election Commission released the information of those who bought bonds from April 1, 2019 to February 15, 2024 through its official website. This is the information that was handed over to the SBI Commission. Although the figures of donations received by political parties are out, it is not revealed who donated to which political party.
Adani and Reliance companies are not named in the list of contributors. The name of the private financial institution in Kerala is among the contributors. Santiago Martin's Future Gaming and Hotel Services Company contributed over 200 crores. Reports are that the company has faced ED action. Megha Engineering Limited has bought bonds worth more than 980 crores hinting that it has faced action by the Income Tax Department. The vaccine manufacturing company Bharat Biotech, Bajaj Auto, Vedanta, Sun Pharma, Apollo Tyres, DLF, Ambuja Housing, PVR, mining companies, ITC, Airtel, etc. are also on the list.
The information handed over by SBI in two parts on Tuesday was uploaded on the official website of the commission in the same step. SBI stated that 22,217 electoral bonds were sold, of which 22,030 were cashed by political parties. Election Commission said in a press release that it is always in favor of transparency. Supreme Court directed that the information should be released before 5 pm today. But it was uploaded last night itself.
