sreekumaran-thampi

Sreekumaran Thampi, who has given us spectacular work in art and literature, is celebrating his 84th birthday, and Malayalis are still unsure of what adjective to mark him. It can be said that this genius has made a stream of songs that give a poetic flavor to Malayali's love, losses, longing, waiting, dream journeys and sadness. It can be said that he is a filmmaker who painted unforgettable pictures on the silver screen for the emotional Malayali. He can be described as an artist who has lit up art and poetry with life and heart without being interested in the games of profit and loss. But Sreekumaran Thampi's literary genius address is beyond all these epithets.

Multi-talented people are those who shine in different fields at the same time. Works and stature of people travel beyond time. Sreekumaran Thampi established his own throne at a time when the trio of Vayalar, P Bhaskaran and ONV were dominating in poetry and songwriting. He established his place without the involvement of help from anyone.

His best songs, movies and poems were born during the period which is described as the golden age of Malayalam cinema and songs. There is no doubt that Malayalam cinema has been blessed with many talented lyricists in the last three decades since then. But along with P Bhaskaran, Vayalar and ONV, it is the songs of Sreekumaran Thambi that are still playing on the minds and lips of the Malayalis.

Sreekumaran Thampi's songs like 'Elanjipoomanam Ozhuki', 'Akale Akale Neelakasham', 'Chandrikayil Aliyunna Chandrakantham' is filled with the seals of the Malayalee's heart and soul. He has received all major awards including Vayalar Award and JC Daniel Award. The autobiography "Jeevitham Oru Pendulum" was accepted by the Malayali as a poetic journey. Sreekumaran Thampi continues to amaze us even today with his mesmerizing array of classics. Kerala Kaumudi wishes its dear friend Sreekumaran Thampi good health on the occasion of his birthday.
