NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi excise policy case. The action comes after the Delhi High Court refused to grant Kejriwal any protection from coercive action in the case. Kejriwal was arrested from his official residence in New Delhi.
A team of eight ED officers reached Kejriwal's house in the evening. It was already hinted that the team may interrogate Kejriwal. The ED team also had a warrant to conduct the inspection.
Meanwhile, AAP has stated that Arvind Kejriwal will remain as the Chief Minister of Delhi. A large police force had camped outside the Chief Minister's residence after the ED team reached there.
The Enforcement Directorate had sent notices to Kejriwal nine times in the Delhi excise policy case. However, Kejriwal approached the court pointing out that all these were illegal. Earlier, the court had said that the Delhi Chief Minister should not be arrested in the case. The court issued the order after considering Kejriwal's plea that he should not be arrested if he appeared for questioning. But when the case reached the High Court, it refused to grant any protection to Kejriwal.
