THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Slight relief from last day's rough seas which was because of the swell waves phenomenon. Severe sea storms occurred in four districts of the state yesterday as part of swell waves based on strong winds formed in the southern part of the Indian Ocean.

Although the strength had decreased, the waves still came ashore yesterday. The sea rose in various areas of the capital yesterday. The sea level has not subsided completely in Vizhinjam, Pozhiyoor, Karumkulam and Adimalathura.

Pozhiyoor side is more distressed. Here five houses were completely destroyed and 100 boats were damaged. 22 families are in the relief camp. In Kollam, Alappad Vellanathuruth, Cheriazheekkal, Azheekal Beach and Kollam Beach are also experiencing strong waves. Visiting the beach is also prohibited. 40 houses were flooded here. Around 20 families are staying in the camps. Two people were injured when their boat capsized in Muthalapozhi.

In Alappuzha, there were strong waves in Purakkad, Valanjavazhy and Pallithode areas. The waves have calmed down at Perinjanam in Thrissur.

Caution

The Kerala Coast and South Tamil Nadu Coast are still on alert today. It is estimated that the sea will be completely calm from tomorrow.

High waves of half a meter to one and a half meters height is also possible. According to the National Center for Oceanography, the wave speed is likely to vary between 5 cm and 20 cm per second. Fishermen and coastal residents should continue to be vigilant due to the possibility of storm surge. As rough seas are likely to intensify, people should evacuate from danger areas as per the instructions of the authorities. Fishing vessels such as boats and rowboats should be kept safely tied up in the harbour. Trips to the beach and activities in the sea should be completely avoided.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister Saji Cherian has informed that the situation related to the sea disturbance in South Kerala is being monitored and steps have been taken to ensure the safety of the fishermen. Control rooms have been set up for contact in case of emergency.
