A very serious crime of molesting a woman who was in the ICU after surgery was committed last year at Kozhikode Medical College. The attendant MM Saseendran was arrested in the molestation case registered based on the information passed by the woman, who was semi-conscious at the time of the abuse, to her relatives. Saseendran was suspended by the medical college authorities. After that, attempts were made to threaten the life of the victim in order to withdraw the case. Six employees, including nurses, have been suspended in the context of the victim raising these matters in front of the Minister of Health.
In the later days, many people from the service organization who stood with the accused came to the scene and played many dramas to save those who threatened the victim. The suspension of the employees except Saseendran was later withdrawn and they were transferred based on the intervention and direction of the Tribunal. PB Anitha, a nurse, was the only one who took a stand in favour of the victim of abuse. Suspecting that this would strengthen the case, many have taken a hostile stance towards her since then. The only crime she committed was standing fearlessly for truth and justice. With that, she became a target in the eyes of the authorities.
Anitha was transferred to Idukki on November 28. Anitha approached the tribunal complaining that her side was not heard. The tribunal stayed the transfer for two months and directed the government to examine the petition and take action within this time. The government's revenge only came to light then. The government said that the transfer proceeding was not wrong and was appropriate. What message does this send to society? By approving Anitha's transfer, the health department has given a hint that if such an incident happens tomorrow in the ICU of another government medical college, not a single person should utter a single word, and if they do so, they will have to suffer similar transfer torture. Anitha approached the High Court against the government's action and obtained a favourable verdict, but the government is continuing to be stubborn as if they are always right.
This incident also convinces that the government will stand by the service organizations even if they are opposed by the High Court. The Left Government should stand with the victim and not with the employees of the medical college. Action should be taken against the culprits irrespective of the colour of the party they belong to. Along with this, the employee who decided to support the victim should be protected as well. However, the health department has now taken a stand against this without any shame. The department has also shown insolence that it is not going to obey the High Court. Such actions only serve to embarrass the government. It is not enough to just preach that female protection will be given the first priority, it must also be convinced by action.
