THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two more installments of social security and welfare pensions will be distributed starting on Tuesday with each recipient receiving Rs 3200. An installment was paid last month.
Distributions are made based on the occasions of Ramzan and Vishu. Four months of payments are still outstanding. All 62 lakh welfare pension beneficiaries who have undergone muster roll verification will receive the funds. The state has also allocated a central share of 6.88 lakh.
Kerala is providing the funds in advance amidst the central government's withholding of the pension share since last April.
An amount of 1800 crore is required to cover two months of pension payments. This amount has been sourced from the Cooperative Welfare Fund to cover salaries and pensions for state government employees and retirees. Welfare fund pensions will also be covered from this fund. With the start of the new financial year, the first borrowing will occur this week, with an understanding that it will be repaid.
Complaints were raised that 62,000 individuals did not receive their allocated pensions last month. According to the Finance Department, this was due to a glitch in the Public Finance Management System network, established by the central government for disbursing the central share.
