THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Human Rights Commission has directed the Thiruvananthapuram district administration to pay the bank interest from 2018 to 2023 for causing a delay in handing over the compensation announced for a housewife who lost her house in the 2018 floods. Rs 47,500, which was sanctioned in 2018, was handed over to the woman only after five years.
The action was taken on the complaint lodged by KG Krishnaveni, who lives in Santhivila in Nemom. The Commission has received a report on the matter from the District Collector. The complainant's house was destroyed on September 5, 2018. Following this, she moved to a rented house. After receiving the complaint, the Commission issued a summons to the Thiruvananthapuram Tehsildar. The district administration transferred Rs 47,500 to the complainant's bank account after this.
K Baijunath, the acting chairperson and judicial member of the Commission, asked the district administration to investigate whether there was any lapse on the part of revenue officials in transferring the sanctioned amount to the bank account of the complainant and take further steps. The Commission also stated in the order that the delay caused in handing over the money to the complainant and her mentally retarded son is regrettable. The Commission gave the instructions to the Land Revenue Commissioner and the District Collector.
