THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Haritha Kerala Mission aims to establish 1000 green islands in the state this year with the theme 'Live Oxygen Parlour' to promote breathing fresh air. Currently, there are only 2324 green islands in the state, down from 2800, spread over 300 hectares. The decrease is attributed to a lack of maintenance and water resulting in the disappearance of 476 green islands, which will be rejuvenated.

Additionally, five model green islands will be developed in each district, serving as biodiversity models for student education. Information about the plants will be displayed on boards and facilities for both entertainment and education will be provided, resembling small forests. Operations are expected to commence in June.

The mission also focuses on reviving sacred groves(kavu), crucial forest remnants with ecological significance which safeguard air, water and soil quality. Currently, 116 sacred groves have been rehabilitated with Kasaragod district hosting the highest count, 70. Efforts to protect deteriorating privately-owned sacred groves have commenced.

Kannur has the largest green island in the state spanning 136 acres in Muzhakkunn panchayat. Moreover, a green island will be developed on 25 acres of land owned by Chavara KMML. The railways are also constructing 7.5 acres of mangroves or greenfields in southern districts to offset mangrove clearing for railway development. Additionally, green plants are being planted in the name of Devaharitham at Devaswom board locations.

Main objective is to expand green spaces with a target of establishing 1000 green islands this year alongside efforts to revive sacred groves.
