MUNNAR: In an alarming case for residents in Munnar, locals spotted a streak of tigers in the Kannimala Lower Division area of Munnar on Saturday. As per reports, the tigers first descended the region from the forest, just four days back. Kannimala is adjacent to the forest, and in the past has encountered tiger attacks, mostly attacks on cattle. Locals complain that tigers regularly enter the residential area of this place.

Plantation workers in the area first spotted the tigers prowling in the region. For many months, the place has been reeling in fear after cases of tigers attacking cows surged abruptly. Locals have approached the forest department for solace but no significant efforts were made to alleviate the tension. It is amidst this tension that the plantation workers spotted a group of tigers in the area on Saturday.

This area is uninhibited but the scare remains as the residential territory is just two kilometres away from the tigers’ reach. Despite the news, the forest officials remain hesitant to confirm the tigers' presence and now say that more checks should be conducted to ensure the authenticity of the news.

Just two days before, locals spotted a tiger in the area and coincidentally a cow was killed that day by some unknown wild animals. The locals are now demanding the first officials drop their lackadaisical approach and make necessary efforts to allay the tensions.
