THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Apart from Palakkad and Thrissur districts, five other districts are also likely to experience high temperatures in the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. According to the figures released by the IMD at 5.30 pm today, the maximum temperatures recorded in the districts of Palakkad and Thrissur were 5 to 5.5 degrees Celsius higher than average. The districts of Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kozhikode had maximum temperatures that were three to four degrees warmer than average. Hence, people living in these districts should exercise caution tomorrow. Temperature is likely to go up in other districts as well.

Meanwhile, the IMD sounded an orange alert in some areas of Palakkad district today due to the possibility of a heatwave. It also issued a yellow alert in some areas of Kollam and Thrissur districts due to the possible threat of a heatwave.

The maximum temperature is likely to reach 41°C in Palakkad, 40°C in Kollam, 39°C in Thrissur, 38°C in Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, and Kannur, 37°C in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kasargod, and 36°C in Thiruvananthapuram (3-5°C higher than usual) from today to May 3, the IMD said.

Most of these districts, except the hilly areas, are expected to experience unpleasant weather till May 3 due to high temperatures and humid air. In the wake of the heatwave, the district administration in Palakkad has issued directives to close schools. The educational institutions will remain closed till May 2. As the heatwave is a situation requiring extreme caution, people, as well as the administrative and non-administrative systems, should exercise extreme caution.
