NEYYATTINKARA: In a shocking incident, a man committed suicide after not getting back the money he deposited in the cooperative bank for his daughter's marriage and house renovation. The deceased is Neyyattinkara Chaaykkottukonam native Somasagaram (55). He died yesterday morning while undergoing treatment at the hospital after consuming poison. Somasagaram had deposited Rs 6 lakh in the Perumpazhuthoor Service Co-operative Bank in Neyyattinkara.
Somasagaram, who was also a banana farmer, attempted suicide on April 19 by consuming a pesticide. Although he experienced vomiting that day, he did not inform anyone about drinking pesticide. As the vomiting did not stop the next day, he was taken to Neyyatinkara General Hospital at the insistence of his wife. He revealed about consuming the pesticide only when the doctors repeatedly questioned him regarding the cause of the vomiting. Following this, he was immediately rushed to the Medical College Hospital. The hospital staff then informed the police about the matter. After learning about the incident from the hospital staff, the police and magistrate reached the hospital and recorded Somasagaram's statement.
Somasagaram, who was a construction worker, had deposited his hard-earned money in the Perumpazhuthoor bank. After making several requests, he got back Rs 1 lakh out of Rs 6 lakh he deposited in the bank. He had demanded his entire savings from the bank to renovate his old house and for the marriage of his daughter. Although he went to the bank for several months requesting to return the remaining five lakhs, the bank authorities refused to return his money. According to the relatives, the bank officials told Somasagaram that it was not able to return his money as people who took loans from the bank were not repaying the money. Although he had filed an application at the Neyyattinkara Municipality for the renovation of his house, the officials denied the application saying that he was not eligible. Following this, he had been experiencing severe mental distress. However, he was not ready to complain to anyone that he did not get his money back from the bank. He did not even inform his family about the non-cooperation from the bank. Marayamuttam police conducted an inquest. After the postmortem at the medical college, the body was cremated near the house at around 5 pm yesterday.
