MUMBAI: In a shocking incident, a mother and her baby died after the doctors at a hospital carried out a Caesarian delivery using the torchlight of a mobile phone. The incident took place at a hospital run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai. The deceased woman has been identified as Sahidun (26), the wife of Khusruddin Ansari, a differently-abled man. The couple got married 11 months ago.
Sahidun was admitted to Sushma Swaraj Maternity Home for delivery on Monday. The family alleged that the power went out in the maternity home on Monday and the generator wasn't turned on for three hours. The family also alleged that doctors carried out another delivery in the darkness even after the death of Sahidun and the baby.
The family members have been protesting outside the hospital for the last four days. Following this, the BMC ordered an inquiry into the incident.
"My daughter-in-law was perfectly healthy. All her reports were satisfactory. They took her for the delivery at 7 am on April 29. They kept her the whole day in the labour room. There was no problem till eight o'clock at night. The doctors informed us that the delivery would be normal. However, when I went to see her, she was covered in blood. They made an incision to show that she had some health issues. They then asked us to sign the consent form saying that a Caesarian was needed. That's when the power went out. They also did not allow us to take her to another hospital," Ansari's mother said.
"The hospital staff took us to the operation theatre and carried out the delivery with the help of a mobile torchlight. When the child died, the doctor told us that the mother would survive. They then referred her to the Sion Hospital. However, she also died by then," Ansari's mother added.
The family has also released pictures and videos of the hospital staff carrying out another delivery with the help of mobile torchlight after the death of Sahidun.
