KOCHI: A 23-year-old woman has confessed to police about throwing her newborn from the apartment in Panampilly Nagar. City Police Commissioner S Shyamsundar meanwhile raised doubts on whether the young woman was a victim of sexual assault. The parents of the woman had no idea about the childbirth and were shocked to learn that the newborn was thrown from the apartment.
As per reports, the woman gave birth inside the toilet at 5 am on Friday. Three hours later, the baby with an unremoved umbilical cord was thrown down from the apartment in a parcel envelope. The commissioner said the horrific crime of dropping down the newborn may be the result of the panic the women went through during those times. There is a wound on the baby's neck. Therefore, it is doubtful whether the body was thrown down after the killing. The autopsy report will confirm this.
The body of the newborn wrapped in a parcel cover was first seen by Jibin, a contract driver at the Cochin Shipyard.
‘At first, I thought it was a doll. But on closer look, I saw blood oozing out. Then I got confirmation that it was a newborn.” Jibin said.
Meanwhile, the investigation of the case is at a critical stage. The police said that the woman who was taken into custody will be arrested soon. She has been shifted to the hospital for medical treatment. Arrests will be recorded after interrogation.
The clue about the young woman was found during the investigation focused on the Amazon parcel cover used to wrap the baby's body. The address on the envelope was not legible due to blood stains, but the barcode was clear. The investigation was focused on this.
It is also doubted that the woman intended to throw the newborn into an empty field nearby but missed the angle in panic and ended up making the toddler die on the road.
