THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The contract for the development of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station has been awarded to a consortium of K-Rail and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. 439 crore project will be completed in 42 months. This is a major project being undertaken by K-Rail while Silverline is awaiting approval. This consortium also has the contract for the project to make Varkala station international standard.
The central station development is under the Amrit Bharat scheme of the Centre. There will be separate lounges for arriving and departing passengers like airports. These will be connected by lifts. Passengers will be admitted only before the scheduled departure time of the train. This is to reduce congestion on the platforms. More digital display boards will be installed to convey information.
The existing building will be retained and new buildings will be constructed to the south and north. There will also be multi-level car parking on the south side. The new terminal will have an aqua green colored roof with an undulating roof and pillars in the shape of an elephant's head.
K-Rail is also constructing 27 railway flyovers in the state. Work started at Nilambur. Land acquisition for flyover at Kollam Polayathode is in progress. K-Rail is also project management consultancy for Thiruvananthapuram smart city projects.
