KOCHI: The body of the newborn baby thrown from the fifth floor of an apartment in Panampilly Nagar onto the road, was cremated at the public crematorium in Pullepady. The body was handed over to the police released from Kalamasery Medical College.
After reaching the crematorium, the police handed over the body to the corporation. Kochi Mayor M Anil Kumar received the body. Policemen, corporation councilor, locals and others paid their last respects to the baby. The police got the consent from the baby’s mother to cremate the body in the public crematorium. The baby's mother is presently remanded.
The woman smothered the baby and then threw the body from the fifth floor of the apartment on to the road. The 23-year-old woman’s parents were not aware of her pregnancy. She delivered the baby in her bathroom at around 5 am on May 3. After three hours, she wrapped the body in a parcel cover and threw the baby out of the apartment.
The news that came first was that a dancer from Thrissur impregnated her. However, the initial assessment of the police is that he is not involved in the crime. He was aware of her pregnancy. His statement to the police via phone said that they had not spoken to each other for more than two months. The police checked her phone and had confirmed this.
The woman had not filed a complaint against him. A decision has been taken to file a sexual abuse case if she has a complaint, while grilling her in custody. The police said the youth’s love was not sincere. He severed all ties after knowing that she was pregnant. The woman was in severe mental stress and was afraid to tell her parents. She did not go for an abortion as she knew about her pregnancy only very late. She told police that she decided to get rid of the baby after her delivery.
She learnt about childbirth through internet. She wore oversized clothes to hide her pregnancy. The knowledge via internet helped her in giving birth without help.
