PARAVUR: In a shocking incident, a newlywed bride was subjected to brutal torture by her husband on the sixth day of their marriage in the name of dowry. The bride, a native of Maliyankara in North Paravur, was brutally tortured by her husband Rahul demanding more gold and a car as dowry. The couple got married at the Guruvayur Temple on May 5. Rahul is a native of Thekkevallikkunnu in Pantheeramkavu.
Rahul is an aeronautical engineer in Germany, while his wife is an engineer in a private company in Thiruvananthapuram. Both families got acquainted through a matrimonial site. The bride's father is a retired government employee and president of the Cooperative Bank in Paravur. The bride's family had given her 75 sovereigns of jewels for the marriage.
Rahul brutally tortured his wife after getting drunk at a party held on May 11. He tied a mobile phone cable around her neck and hit her forehead and nose repeatedly. He also injured her lower lip. The violence continued till dawn. When the bride's family visited the groom's home on May 12, the bride remained inside the bedroom. Only when the relatives opened the closed bedroom, did they find the bride in a weak state with injuries on her face and lips. Although Rahul's mother and sister were there at the house, they claimed that they did not hear anything from the air-conditioned room. Rahul's father passed away some years ago.
Following this, the bride's relative took her to a hospital and lodged a complaint with the Pantheeramkavu police. The bride is undergoing counselling. The bride's relatives said that they have informed Rahul's family that they are not interested in continuing the marriage with Rahul. Apart from domestic violence, the police have also registered a case against Rahul under the Dowry Prohibition Act.
