dowry-case

KOZHIKODE: The police have registered a case against Rahul, the husband who brutally beat up his newlywed wife in Pantheeramkavu in Kozhikode. The Pantheeramkavu police registered a case against Rahul on charges including attempted murder and dowry abuse.

The bride's family had lodged a complaint with the Chief Minister, Women's Commission, Ernakulam Rural District Police Chief demanding that a case be filed against Rahul for attempted murder. The bride's father alleged that the Pantheeramkavu police had initially hesitated to register a case in the incident and forced the bride's family to go for a settlement. As the incident became controversial, Pantheerankavu police called the bride's father on the phone and asked him to come to the station with his daughter.

Although Rahul came to see the girl six months ago, he showed interest in the marriage only recently. The wedding engagement took place three weeks ago. The marriage took place very quickly as Rahul, an aeronautical engineer in Germany, had very few days of leave.

"The groom's family had not made any particular demand as dowry before the marriage. They just told us to give whatever we have. We gave them 75 sovereigns of gold and two lakh rupees," The bride's father said.

Meanwhile, the bride who was subjected to brutal torture said that Rahul had said that he would kill her when he tied the mobile phone charging cable around her neck. He beat her with a belt when she attempted to run away from him. She soon fell unconscious as he dragged her to the bed and hit her.

"When I opened my eyes, I was in Baby Memorial Hospital. Rahul, his mother and sister were there at the hospital. They told the hospital staff that I fell down in the bathroom," she said.
