PATHANAMTHITTA: Kayamkulam Kochunni will make it possible if you light a candle on your seat and pray for the return of the stolen object! It is said that the object stolen was returned to a housewife who broke down crying for her stolen gold. When a bunch of bananas was stolen, the farmer who complained about it found a similar bunch in his yard the next day! There are many stories about Kayamkulam Kochunni, whose idol is situated near Maladevar in Ilanthur Edaparakkaav.
According to records, Kochunni was a notorious thief in Central Travancore who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. When the thefts became too numerous, the Karthikapally Tehsildar arrested him but Kochunni escaped from prison. During his escape, the policeman and his helper were killed. Later, Kochunni was invited to his friend Kochupillai's house in Vazhappilli, where he was drugged and arrested after medicine was mixed into his food. Kochunni died after 91 days in jail in Thiruvananthapuram and was buried in Petta Juma Masjid, Thiruvananthapuram according to documents. The Pandakasala family of Kayamkulam is said to be the fifth generation of Kochunni.
The Oorali (tribal leader) of Edaparakkavu was on his way back from meeting the king in Thiruvananthapuram when he saw an upside-down figure on a banyan tree where he was resting. When asked who it was, the figure replied that it was Kayamkulam Kochunni. Kochunni also asked for a permanent seat. Legend has it that Kochunni was then brought to Edaparakkaav and given a seat(via rituals). It is believed that Kochunni died in Thiruvananthapuram, and the Oorali saw Kochunni's spirit.
