THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Architect and Padma Shri recipient G Sankar said a major portion of Kerala will be under water in 36 years. The example for it is that even when small rains lash Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, many areas of it will be submerged in water. We need to build a house according to the nature of the land we get. Shankar warned that the vibrations of breaking rocks and sand mining are increasing the momentum of the disasters.
‘Realized first that the land in Kerala is not safe when Tsunami hit in 2014. Every year since the 2018 floods, we are under the threat of it. Along with climate change, there is one more thing, the giant earthmovers. Buildings were built according to the topography of Kerala for so long. There are changes for over four decades. JCBs are ploughing into the heart of Kerala. The fields and mountains were turned into and all these are against nature.
We need to build a house according to the nature of the land we get. The vibrations of breaking rocks and sand mining are increasing the momentum of disasters. All the rivers are getting polluted. A major portion of Kerala will be under water in 36 years. An example of this is that even when it rains lightly, many areas of Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram are under water.
Water must be given a place to flow. We will witness disaster wherever we close it. The corporation removes the plastic waste accumulated in the drains before the rainy season and is kept around it. It will fall back again in the rain. We should not let that happen.
The time for Malayalees to learn water literacy has been passed. Development of roads after eliminating footpaths should be avoided, said Sankar.
