KANNUR: An Air India Express cabin crew member from Kolkata was arrested for trying to smuggle gold by concealing it in her rectum. Surabhi Khatun, cabin crew of Air India Express from Muscat to Kannur, was taken into custody at the Kannur airport. A total of 960 grams of gold was seized from her. According to the DRI, this is the first case in India where a cabin crew has been caught trying to smuggle gold through the rectum.

After the court procedures, Khatun was remanded for 14 days to the women’s prison in Kannur.

Meanwhile, a woman who arrived at the Kochi International Airport with illegal gold worth Rs 20 lakh was caught by the customs. A Kottayam native who arrived in Kochi from Dubai on Air India Express on Tuesday morning was arrested. The woman who took a pre-paid cab from the airport was heading towards a hotel in Ernakulam. Midway through the journey, the cab driver spotted one car following them for some time. Turning suspicious, the driver surreptitiously informed the terminal manager about the incident and shrewdly detoured the vehicle back to the airport.

The customs officials were already alerted about the incident and were waiting for the culprit at the airport. The officials found gold biscuits weighing 261 grams hidden inside her socks.
