THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Human Rights Commission has sought an explanation from the municipal secretary demanding that the renovation work of the Vellayani's Parakkat pond, where two children drowned on Thursday evening, be stopped until the unscientific nature is resolved. The commission registered a case in the incident.
The action was initiated by the Commission Acting Chairperson and Judicial Member K. Baijunath. The case will be considered in the sitting at the commission office on June 28.
According to the complaint, the children who went swimming may have drowned because they fell into the well built inside the pond to store water during summer. The well, which had been lying unused for a long time, was recently renovated. According to the complaint, the concerned officials have the responsibility to eliminate the risk of accidents while renovating the pool.
It is demanded that renovation work should be continued only after fixing the unscientific construction of the pond. "The deceased children belong to poor families. Compensation should be collected from the officials, who caused the accident by keeping the well inside the pond, and it should be given to the families of the dead children. There was no warning around the pool where the renovation work was going on," complainant and human rights activist Ragam Rahim said.
The deceased Muhammad Bilal (15), son of Najeem and Meher of Nellanikkal Kadayil Veedu and their neighbours Shafeek's and Raseena's son Muhammad Ihsan (15) are Class 10 students of Victory Higher Secondary School in Nemom.
