NEW DELHI: The results of the Lok Sabha elections are out and the new members of Parliament (MP) are all set to take their seats. The third government led by Narendra Modi is expected to take oath on Sunday. The designated MPs will be sworn in after that. The preparations for this are in full swing in Delhi.
Do you know the monthly salary of an MP? They will get a basic salary of Rs one lakh. The salary was hiked after 2018. The government increased the salaries of MPs citing the rising cost of living. Along with the salary, they will get a decent amount as allowances and benefits. Apart from this, the immediate family will get benefits like free treatment and free travel.
Benefits and allowances
MPs receive Rs 70,000 monthly as constituency allowance. This is to cover expenses related to maintaining offices and engaging with constituents within their electoral regions.
Office expenses
A MP gets Rs 60,000 monthly for office expenses including stationary, telecommunication and staff salaries.
Daily allowance
MPs are entitled to a daily allowance of Rs 2,000 for accommodation, food and other expenses while they are in the capital to attend parliamentary sessions and committee meetings.
Travel allowance
MPs and their immediate families are entitled to 34 free domestic flights per year. They will also get free first-class train travel for official and personal purposes. MPs can claim mileage allowances when traveling by road within their constituencies.
Housing and accommodation
MPs are provided with rent-free accommodation in prime locations during their five-year term. Depending on seniority, they may get bungalows, flats or hostel rooms. MPs not choosing to use the official accommodation can claim a housing allowance of 2,00,000 per month.
Medical facilities
MPs and their immediate families get free medical care under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). Free treatment will be available in government hospitals and selected private hospitals under the scheme.
Phone and Internet
MPs are allowed up to 1,50,000 free telephone calls per year. They also get free high speed internet connections at their residences and offices.
Water and electricity
Up to 50,000 units of free electricity and up to 4,000 kiloliters of water are provided to MPs annually. Altogether, the figures show that an MP gets around Rs 2,30,000 per month.
To Prime Minister and Ministers
Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers get extra allowances for entertaining visitors and so on. The Prime Minister gets Rs 3,000 per month and the cabinet ministers Rs 2,000 per month.
MPs from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Ladakh also get some special allowances that others do not. This is due to the geographical features of their constituency.
Pension
Former MPs will receive a pension of Rs 25,000 per month after serving one term in Parliament. They get a rise of Rs 2000 monthly for extra year of service.
