NEW DELHI: When Narendra Modi's third cabinet takes office today, many prominent members of the previous cabinet will be left behind. BJP leaders and former Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Anurag Thakur, Narayan Rane and Rajeev Chandrasekhar did not get a chance.

Smriti Irani, who contested from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, lost to Kishori Lal Sharma of Congress by 1.6 lakh votes. Irani was the Minister of Women and Child Development in the second Modi government. It is reported that Anurag Thakur will not be getting a ministerial position in the third Modi government despite winning the Lok Sabha elections from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh. Thakur was in the previous cabinet as Minister of Sports and Communications. Narayan Rane, who won Lok Sabha elections from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, is also absent from Modi's cabinet this time. Narayan was the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Industries in the previous Union Cabinet. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who was the IT department minister in the previous cabinet, is also not in the cabinet this time.

Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar, Nitin Gadkari, Mansukh Mandaviya, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Kiran Rijiju and others are prominent figures who will join the third Modi government from the second cabinet. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath at 7:15 pm at Rashtrapati Bhavan. There are two people from Kerala in the third Modi cabinet. Apart from Suresh Gopi, who won from Thrissur, BJP state general secretary Adv George Kurien will also become a Union Minister.
