KANNUR: CPM Kannur district committee member Manu Thomas has been expelled from party membership pending investigation.
Manu Thomas had earlier complained to the party that the DYFI leaders were receiving profit shares from gold smuggling and swarnam pottikkal quotation groups. Soon after, a complaint was raised within the party against Manu Thomas regarding illegal acquisition of property. His membership was not renewed from 2023 because of this. Manu Thomas stayed away from party events for a year. The official explanation is that the action is due to the non-renewal of membership.
The expulsion decision was taken in the district committee meeting held last day. Manu Thomas was the former DYFI Kannur District President and Taliparamba Block Panchayat President. Manu Thomas had taken a strong stand in DYFI against Akash Thillankeri's gold smuggling quotation gang. He also lodged a complaint with the police against being threatened by the quotation gang. After this, Akash and his associates launched a severe cyber attack against Manu.
When Manu's complaint was shelved by the CPM district leadership, he raised the issue again when the district committee discussed the rectification document approved by the state committee. This was followed by accusations against Manu within the party related to the illegal acquisition of property. Manu's non-cooperation with the party started in a situation where action was certain.
