lakshadweep-halwa

KOCHI: The taste of 'Coconut Halwa', Lakshadweep's traditional sweet, is spreading beyond the island. As a part of this, Coconut Halwa is about to be included in the National Geographical Indications of the Ministry of Commerce. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra on the island has started the steps for this.

Scientists from the Kasaragod Center of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research are helping the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in these efforts by providing product studies and technical assistance. It also gets financial assistance from the Coconut Development Board. Coconut halwa is one of the main sources of income for island women. If the product earns the Geographical Indication status, its quality will be guaranteed. The product can then be marketed commercially with government protection.

Marayoor jaggery, Palakkadan matta, Aranmula kannadi (mirror), Balaramapuram handloom, Pokkali rice etc are some of the products from Kerala that have secured the Geographical Indication status. These products have good sales in the global market.
