MUMBAI: After triumphing in Barbados, the Indian cricket team is back in the country amid a rapturous reception from the fans. The marine drive in Mumbai has already turned into a sea of supporters. Such participation in the victory parade is unprecedented in Indian sports history. The Indian team's victory parade has been decided on an open bus from Nariman Point to Wankhade Stadium.
A felicitation ceremony for the world champions is organized at the stadium. A special venue has also been prepared here.
Earlier, the Indian team had to wait for one day for departure considering the bad weather conditions in Barbados. Rohit Sharma and his team reached New Delhi this morning and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After a brief talk session, the stars of the Indian team had breakfast with the PM. In a special flight, the Indian team arrived at Mumbai on Thursday evening and received a water salute from the airport authority.
The Wankhede Stadium was thronging with supporters even hours before the arrival of the Indian team. The two-kilometre road from Nariman Point to the stadium was packed with fans. The fans have braved the rains to see their favourite cricket stars flaunt the hard-earned trophy. And now, with the crowd becoming unmanageable, the bus ferrying the cricket team is stuck in the traffic while the event is getting delayed.
The same excitement and vigour among cricket fans were last seen in 2011 when India clichéd the Cricket World Cup after 1983. And this time, the Indian team ended the drought of 17 years to bring back the T20 trophy home.
