NEW DELHI: The Central Government has notified the appointment of Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh High Court Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan as Supreme Court judges. The recommendation of the Supreme Collegium was accepted by the Central Government and the President. With the two assuming charge, the Supreme Court will reach its full strength of 34 members which was gone after the retirement of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice AS Bopanna.

Justice R Mahadevan is a senior judge from backward class of Tamil Nadu. His appointment is part of the representation of Scheduled Tribes in the Supreme Court. The collegium also considered his excellent track record in judicial service.

First Supreme Court judge from Manipur

Justice Koteshwar is the first Manipur native to become a judge of the Supreme Court. It is interesting to note that the appointment of Justice N Koteswar is to ensure the representation of North Eastern states. Kotiswar Singh became Guwahati High Court Judge on 17 October 2011. When the High Court was established in Manipur, he shifted there. Kotiswar became the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir - Ladakh High Court on 15 February 2023. He has tenure in the Supreme Court is till February 28, 2025.
