THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that rains are intensifying in the state. Orange alert has been issued in districts from Malappuram to Kasaragod today. Apart from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, yellow alert has been sounded in other districts.
The weather department informed that after the present low pressure formed in Bay of Bengal and located over Odisha weakens, a new low pressure is likely to form in northwest Bay of Bengal by July 19. As a result of this, monsoons in the Arabian Sea remain active and widespread rains are received in Kerala.
A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in eight districts today due to the continued rains. The holiday is in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Palakkad, Idukki, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kannur and Kottayam. There is no change in the exams. The holiday is not applicable to the colleges in Kannur.
A travel ban has been imposed in various parts of the state in view of the heavy rains.
