MUMBAI: A sailor went missing after a fire broke out in the Indian Navy's warship INS Brahmaputra which was undergoing maintenance works at the Mumbai naval dockyard. The ship, which was severely damaged by the fire, tilted extensively and is lying on its side. The INS Brahmaputra is a warship indigenously built by India.

The fire broke out in the ship on Sunday evening. The fire was brought under control by Monday morning with the help of employees in the yard and the fire force. A search is being carried out to find the missing sailor. The Indian Navy has ordered a probe into the incident.

"... The fire was brought under control by the ship's crew with the assistance of firefighters from Naval Dockyard, Mumbai and other ships in the harbour, by Monday morning. Further, follow-on actions including sanitisation checks for assessment of residual risk of fire were carried out," the navy said in a statement.

The INS Brahmaputra was commissioned into the Indian Navy in April 2000. The ship is manned by a crew of 40 officers and 330 sailors.
