THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala High Court had on Wednesday stayed the release of Justice Hema Commission report on the problems faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. This was widely discussed the other day. The court issued an interim stay on the plea filed by producer Sajimon Parayil. Actress Malaa Parvathy responded to Kerala Kaumudi Online on the stay imposed.
‘I didn’t expect from the beginning the names of some to surface through the Hema Committee. I don't understand what his goal was. He responded the other day that names of women will come out. This one move seemed to be strange. This is what will happen if moved the court legally in such a thing. All are united in this. Expected a lot from it. The report was expected to look at what is happening in cinema, how it can be made into a professional system, how it can be made transparent for the industry and how it can be more beneficial for the coming generation.
Expected some conditions safeguarding the safety of actresses in the film industry. I don't believe that everything will be fine. I am talking from my experience. Expected some minor changes. I am one who has seen life. When the left government proposed such a committee, a lot was expected from them. For example, hoped that there would be more changes in the system like casting and that the basic needs of the actors will be improved.
It is not possible to say exactly about the condition of everyone. I’ll share about the experience from the other day’s shooting location. A few women traveled a whole day in the train to reach the shooting location. There were no facilities to meet their basic needs. The shooting lasted for 48 hours that day. In this situation, it would have been beneficial if at least a few provisions related to the safety of women come out through the Hema Committee report. We expect many things like this.
Actors of high remuneration are provided the best facilities on the sets. A movie is not possible only with them. The work of ordinary people is also behind this and so that need to be considered. Everyone expected some steps to be taken but nothing happened.
Should ask questions to people who need to be questioned. Want to know their interests. It was first a commission then changed it into a committee. We can understand things from that. With that, some names became irrelevant. What is happening in the film industry? How it can be solved? What is the reason for not agreeing to conduct a single study on that. That itself is a big question.
Everyone opposed the release of the report. Minister Saji Cherian responded that there is no problem in releasing the report. Then why can’t they release it. Why was the report withheld for so long? The report does not say much. I understand that there are a few conditions to ensure the safety of actresses. Had known earlier that no one's name will come out. Then why did Sajimon make such a move? What is he afraid of?
Lakshmi Gopalaswamy is a good actress. Her statement that shooting locations had all safety measures is her own opinion. I have seen the situation of my sets. There have been lapses in providing proper security for supporting artistes.
Casting in movies is not like having experience and educational qualification. Casting is done by personal opinion. Once others realize that a person's opinion will cause problems, many people only try to remove them from the movie, so most of them remain silent. There is no other way. I have had similar experiences, she said.
