THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Pension reform in Water Authority has been implemented with retrospective effect from July 1, 2019.
Minimum pension will be Rs.11,500. The maximum pension is Rs 83,400. The maximum family pension will be Rs.55,040. Pension is 50 percent of salary. Family pension is thirty percent. The order is applicable only to those who joined the service and retired before April 1, 2013.
The death and retirement gratuity will be a maximum of Rs.17 lakhs. Dearness relief will be allowed as per the rate of dearness allowance. There is no decision regarding dearness relief till April 1, 2021.
Medical Allowance has been fixed at Rs 500 and Special Care Allowance at Rs 1000 for those who have completed 80 years of age. The financial liability arising out of pension revision should be met from the own funds of the water authority. The order states that the government will not be liable.
Although the reform was implemented retrospectively for government employees and pensioners from February 2021, the pension in the Water Authority was not revised. A group of water authority pensioners held a relay hunger strike in front of the water authority headquarters for 115 days. After the minister's assurance, the strike was temporarily stopped, but when it did not materialize, the strike was started again a week ago. There are 9,800 pensioners.
