PARIS: Sports enthusiasts watch each and every match of the Paris Olympics with high expectations. A statement made by a commentator on the opening day about Pakistan has brought shame to the country. The commentator said that only seven athletes from Pakistan with a population of 24 crores came to participate in the Olympics.
Out of Pakistan's 18-member team, only seven athletes participated in the inauguration. The rest were in different parts of France. This is what led to the controversy. The video of the incident has already gone viral on social media. The video has also been shared by many media in Pakistan.
The response is that the commentator's words are shameful and who was responsible for this. At the same time, some responded that usually seven athletes from Pakistan participate in the opening of the Olympics. Pakistan will make its Olympic debut with the women's 10m air pistol qualifier on Saturday.
The opening ceremony in Paris began at 11 PM IST on Friday night. It is notable that the stars marched past the river Seine in Paris. Last March was a new experience, with 10,500 athletes in about 94 boats travelling six kilometers from near the Austerlitz bridge on the eastern side of the Seine to Tracheo Derou.
Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, was the first to march past, followed by a group of refugees. The Indian team came in 84th place. The colourful opening ceremony, which took place at the Tracheo Derou grounds in front of the Eiffel Tower, was attended by dignitaries including French President Emmanuel Macron and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Buck. Famous singers such as Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Aya Nakamura and others performed.
