KOTTAYAM: When the landslides that hit Wayanad are being discussed, the old slogan 'Call Gadgil and save Kerala' is flooding social media. Many people posted Madhav Gadgil's photo on Facebook after the Wayanad disaster.

"The Western Ghats as a whole have been devastated. What awaits Kerala is a great tragedy if no action is taken. It won't require decades as you may think. Four or five years is enough. You and me will be alive that day. Then you will realise ... who was lying !!!."

The disaster in Wayanad in the Western Ghats is being pointed at to prove that Madhav Gadgil's words are true.

"Some people may have problems with the decision not to allow building construction in landslide areas. The community should think together and find a solution to this. The decision of the officials should not be imposed, but accurate land mapping should be done to see where buildings can be built and where agriculture can be done. This map should be used for all human needs," Madhav Gadgil had clarified.

Campaigns like 'all the farmers will have to be evicted, not even a small construction will be done' became strong. Gadgil had criticized the report prepared by the government chaired by Kasthurirangan to quell the protests, describing it as turning the Western Ghats into a desert and creating an oasis in between.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that some people are campaigning in the name of Gadgil report no matter what the disaster. "Even in 2018 when there was a flood, the campaign was that the disaster could have been avoided if the government had followed what Gadgil had said. Shouldn't we see the change in the weather?" he asked the media.

"The place where the disaster occurred in Wayanad is flat and kilometres away from the ecologically vulnerable area. Water, stones, rocks and mud swept in from six kilometres away, the place where the landslide took place, and caused the disaster here," Chief Minister clarified.
