THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The system for students to study two subjects of their choice in any other college will be implemented from next semester for four-year undergraduate courses. The government has instructed to provide facilities for this in government, self-financed and aided colleges. An order specifying the fees and criteria for this will be issued soon.
This facility is for minor and major subjects which are not available in the college of study. A separate fee will be charged for these courses. The exam should be written in the college conducting the course.
Courses are being allocated in most of the colleges so that teachers can maintain their posts by adjusting their workload. The facility to study courses in other colleges is being provided for this. Subjects that are not convenient to study in colleges will also be allowed to be studied online. Universities will publish the list of quality online courses from the central government, UGC, MHRD, IITs and foreign universities within a month. The government has directed universities to recognize credit earned by students in these courses.
The government allowed students to study in different colleges when the colleges tried to dismantle the course basket system made at the college level to allow the students to choose the subjects of their choice. Earlier, physics and mathematics were compulsory along with chemistry, now physics-electronics, literature-music or only chemistry can be studied along with chemistry. This is what colleges are trying to block. The government had made it clear that the workload, including that of guest teachers, would be maintained for four years.
First exam in November
The first-semester examination of the four-year degree in varsities will be from November 2 to 22. The result will be published by December 22. This is according to the Uniform Academic Calendar.
Saturday classes
If a class is missed due to rain or natural calamity, that class can be held on the next Saturday. This is to ensure study days in the academic calendar.
"Facilitation will be provided to choose courses according to the taste of the children. A subject or two can be studied elsewhere.''
