PATHANAMTHITTA: As the central government's Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme has stopped disbursing funds, the parents of more than three lakh differently-abled people in Kerala are struggling to pay for their treatment. Even after two years of submitting the medical records, those who have paid the premium have not received the amount.

Complaints are being made that information is not available from the Kerala state office of the National Trust-approved Oriental Insurance Company, which implements the insurance. Parents are getting phone numbers of people in Delhi. The parents said that those who speak only Hindi are asking for more documents citing different reasons. Different people pick up the call every time. Applications will be rejected after one month, saying that the deadline has passed.

Parents of some differently-abled people have approached the Legal Services Authority to get the money.

Further treatment of differently-abled people is being delayed as the insurance amount has not been received. The sum assured is useful for hospitalization, therapy, dental diseases etc. The amount is sanctioned on submission of treatment bills within a month. Upto one lakh rupees can be availed.
