THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Biju (50), a native of Kaithamukku, Thiruvananthapuram was thrown into a life of mystery when he suffered a serious head injury after a fall during construction work. He has no house of his own and no health to work. Finally, Biju and six family members found a place to rest their heads under the Thakaraparambu flyover. They have been living a miserable life here for six months now. The food packages given by some kind-hearted people are what quenches their hunger.
Biju took shelter under the flyover along with his wife Girija (49), mother Lalitha (86), mentally challenged sister Shanu (51), paternal sister Nirmala (76), relatives Ravi (59) and Rajan (63). They live on the side of the road to Sreekanteswaram. They have their pet dog Kalyani with them.
This is a place to park cars but they have no other option. Police come and wake them up and try to drive them away when they are sleeping at night. They leave after hearing the family's plight. There is also the threat of gangsters. The family has to beg to them so that they can rest their heads. The most difficult problem is finding a washroom.
House lost in the fall
Biju, a construction worker, fell and got injured in 2002. A lot of money was spent on treatment. With that, the roadside shed where he lived was leased to someone for Rs 35,000. The house could not be taken back after four and a half months of treatment. He sold the house to the same person at a low price. Biju had searched for a small house for rent but no one was willing to give him one. With that, the money that was left with him ran out. They have nowhere else to go.
