THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the Kerala government will provide a monthly rent of 6,000 rupees to victims of the recent disaster in Wayanad. Speaking at a press conference, Vijayan stated that the government's goal is to offer free accommodation, with the decision confirmed during a recent cabinet meeting.
Victims relocating to the homes of relatives will also receive the rent support, while those accommodated in privately provided housing will not be eligible for this aid. In addition, the government will distribute 6 lakhs in compensation to the families of deceased victims—4 lakhs from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and 2 lakhs from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Compensation will be provided to the spouse, children or if dependent, siblings of the deceased.
Assistance will also be extended to dependents of missing persons, with a list to be compiled and published following the completion of police investigations. Those with 70% disability will receive 75,000 rupees, while individuals with 40 to 60% disability will be granted 50,000 rupees. The Chief Minister also mentioned that efforts are underway to recover lost certificates.
To date, 231 bodies and 206 body parts have been recovered from the disaster site. Post-mortem examinations have been completed on all recovered bodies, with 178 identified bodies and two body parts already returned to their families.
