KOTTAYAM: Former MLA P C George has urged the immediate demolition of the Mullaperiyar Dam, citing the need to protect the lives and property of 3.5 million people. Speaking at a press conference, George questioned why a new dam hasn't been built yet, clarifying that his call for action does not imply denying water to Tamil Nadu. However, he emphasized that the safety of residents in five districts of Kerala cannot be compromised.
"The central debate is whether the Mullaperiyar Dam will burst or not. The Honorable Chief Minister says there is no reason to fear, but this assurance is questionable. When Idukki Minister Roshi Augustine was an MLA, he stood for truth and justice. Now, as a minister, that seems to have changed," George remarked.
He pointed out that the Mullaperiyar Dam, now 130 years old, has far exceeded the typical lifespan of such structures. "Experts agree that no dam in the world is safe beyond fifty years. Despite this, the Chief Minister and the Irrigation Minister insist there is no cause for concern. This dam should be demolished without delay to safeguard the lives and property of 35 lakh people," George asserted.
Reiterating his stance, he asked, "Why can't a new dam be built? We're not saying Tamil Nadu shouldn't receive water, but the lives of the people in five districts of Kerala should not be sacrificed for it." He further criticized the camaraderie between Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, suggesting that their alliance in the INDIA coalition is overshadowing critical issues. "Sitting and talking for an hour will solve this problem," P C George concluded.
