NEW DELHI: 70 Padma awardees have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over the rape and murder of woman doctor in Kolkata. In the letter, they demanded that all those behind the incident should be brought to justice and the lives of the health workers should be ensured. The letter was sent by 70 people working in various fields at the national level.

Supreme Court has registered a Suo moto cognizance in the incident. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the case on Tuesday. Two lawyers had written to the Chief Justice requesting the Supreme Court's voluntary intervention.
The female doctor who was a PG trainee of the chest medicine department of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was brutally raped and killed on August 9. There are strong protests across the country over the murder. Doctors are also protesting under the leadership of IMA demanding safety at work.

Meanwhile, the father of the murdered female doctor came forward against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The father said that protesting common people are being jailed and that the Chief Minister's moves cannot be accepted, "Everyone is fighting for justice. The investigation should proceed in the right way. My daughter needs justice," said the father.
