NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has instructed the CBI to file a progress report on the PG doctor murder case in Kolkata by Thursday. The court also sought a status report from the West Bengal government regarding the mob violence incident at RG Kar Hospital on August 15. These directions were issued by the court while considering the case, which it had taken up suo motu.
The court criticized the state government for failing to maintain law and order in the hospital. The court pointed out the incidents of violence against doctors on duty in Bengal, Bihar, and Hyderabad. The court emphasized that ensuring the safety of doctors is a national imperative and that it "cannot wait for another rape for things to change on the ground."
The apex court also constituted a 10-member National Task Force to make recommendations on the prevention of violence and safe working conditions for medical professionals. The task force includes Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin among others.
The court directed the task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months. The court said the Task Force would also prepare an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a dignified working space for interns, residents, and non-resident doctors. The court will consider the case on Thursday.
The post-mortem report had confirmed that the deceased doctor was subjected to extreme brutality. She was strangled to death following a violent rape. The horrific incident occurred on August 9th at the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
