LONDON: Sperm being exported to other countries is something we don't hear much about. But sperm donated in the UK is widely reported to be exported to other countries. Currently there are no restrictions on the export of sperm or eggs abroad.
Within the UK's fertility clinics, a donor's sperm can only be provided to ten families. But it is indicated that there is no such restriction in exporting abroad. Experts warn that when it comes down to it, biologically a single donor can have dozens of half-siblings in many countries. They are calling on the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to tighten regulations to prevent this from happening.
Once sperm is collected from a donor, it can continue to be used for years or decades. 'Donors donate sperm as a beautiful gift to help start a family. It is also possible to earn as much money as possible from it.'- says a donor.
A 10-family limit is enforced in clinics licensed by the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA). Gay couples and lesbian couples are the ones who need sperm.
