THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government ordered the formation of a post-disaster assessment committee comprising central and state government representatives under the supervision of Revenue Department Principal Secretary Tinku Biswal, to assess the compensation in the Wayanad disaster. Dr. Shekhar Kuriakos and Prof. R. Pradeep Kumar will take the lead.
From the 26th to the 31st, the joint committee will conduct a detailed inspection of the disaster-affected area. The state will then request financial support from central government based on the committee report. As per details, it will require at least one month for the report to be completed. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is also likely to meet the Prime Minister after the report gets ready. The initial assessment is that an area of 86,000 square meters has been damaged in a distance of eight kilometres in Wayanad landslides.
A proposal has been submitted to the Center for reconstruction and Rs 1200 crore compensation under the Central Disaster Management Rules. Apart from this, there is a need for financial assistance including relocating people and protecting their jobs. The report prepared by the current expert committee chaired by Dr John Mathai was handed over to the Disaster Management Authority. The expert team has recommended five places in the Meppadi panchayat area for rehabilitation.
1. In addition to the general loss, the committee will also prepare estimates of the loss in the areas of housing, education, health, industry, drinking water supply and public works.
2. Sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, tourism, micro and small-scale industries etc. will be counted separately.
