THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The stray dog that bit 38 people in Thiruvananthapuram city has been diagnosed with rabies. The dog, which was under observation at the Pettah Veterinary Centre, died on Wednesday morning. The dog was confirmed to have rabies after a post-mortem was conducted at the State Institute of Animal Disease, Palode. The dog was buried after the post-mortem.
Among those bitten, Nirmala, a resident of Nemam, sustained deep injuries. More people were bitten in the Nemom area. Dog bite was reported near the Ayurveda College and in Kaimanam, Chiramukku and Karamana areas.
Seek treatment
The municipal health department said that you should seek treatment immediately if you have been bitten or clawed by a dog even in a small way.
Ring vaccination from today
Due to confirmed cases of rabies, a ring vaccination drive will be conducted today for stray dogs in the areas where dog bite was reported. Ring vaccination is a quick procedure for all dogs in the area to prevent the spread of rabies to more dogs. Ring vaccination will be conducted from today in Nemom, Pappanamcode, Attukal, near Ayurveda College and in Kaimanam, Chiramukku, Karamana and Vanchiyoor areas.
Vaccination is led by Kawa, a dog welfare organization. Vaccination was done in 52 wards in collaboration with the 'Kawa' organization. The organization will complete the vaccination in the remaining 48 wards.
Second dog also dead
The municipality had concluded that 38 people were bitten by two stray dogs. However, the second dog could not be caught. The municipal authorities are of the opinion that this dog is also dead. If infected with rabies, the dog will die within four days.
