THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The water shortage that gripped various areas of Thiruvananthapuram city for the past five days has finally been resolved. The supply of water has been partially restored. Areas including Attukal and Ayranimuttam started getting water Monday morning. The corporation authorities have clarified that water supply is being done correctly in most places. There is no leakage. It is reported that water will reach everywhere by morning.

Meantime, the councilor informed that water supply has not been resumed. People complained that water did not reach places like Melancode, PTP Nagar, Vattiyoorkavu, Vazhottukonam, Kuriyathi, Karamana etc. Water is expected to reach these places in the morning. A holiday was declared for educational institutions in Thiruvananthapuram following the disruption of water supply. Kerala University has also postponed the exams scheduled to be held today.

MLA V K Prasanth said the cause of the problem is the lack of experience of the officers and failure should be investigated and action be taken. Minister V Sivankutty while addressing the media on Saturday said drinking water supply would be restored by Sunday morning. However, the people did not get water. In the afternoon, Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine visited the areas where the work was being done and assessed the progress. It was announced that pumping would start at 4 pm. However, the assurances of both the ministers did not yield any results.

A leak was found in the valve installed on the CIT road in the Killipalam-Jagathy area on Saturday. With this the valve had to be unscrewed and set again. Installation of anchor block was also not completed as expected. Landslides occurred during the maintenance and there were several failures in fixing the valve during the progress of the work which made the work prolonged.

In connection with the doubling of the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil railway line, the work of changing the alignment of the 700 MM DI pipeline from PTP Nagar to Ayranimuttam parts and the 500 MM line to Nemom part has hindered the water supply. The fault occurred during the work of changing the 700 MM pipe under the railway line. This caused disruption of water supply. Mudslides on the sides where the pipeline was laid had to be removed. The water authority explained that there was a delay in tightening the nuts and installing the valves.
