NEW DELHI: The mortal remains of late CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury were brought to the CPM National Headquarters AKG Bhavan in Delhi for the public to pay homage. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other politburo members arrived in Delhi to receive the body.
National leaders across the political spectrum including Congress leader Sonia Gandhi paid their last respects to Yechury. Other prominent leaders including Sharad Pawar, Manish Sisodia, Jairam Ramesh, Ramesh Chennithala, Kanimozhi, PK Sreemathy, P Satidevi, KK Shailaja, Manik Sarkar were in attendance. Thousands of students and other party workers flooded JNU on Friday to see a last glimpse of their beloved comrade.
The party leaders paid their last respects by chanting revolutionary slogans in unison. After the funeral procession on Saturday noon, the body will be handed over to Delhi AIIMS for medical study at 5 pm. Sitaram Yechury died on September 12 at 3 pm while undergoing treatment at AIIMS due to a lung infection. He was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 due to a high fever.
Yechury’s wife and prominent journalist Seema Chisti, daughter Akhila and daughter-in-law Swathi were present during the CPM leader’s final moments.
